Caroline Garcia pays ultimate respect to Iga Swiatek

Caroline Garcia acknowledged that playing Iga Swiatek alone is one of the biggest challenges a WTA player can face in this era of tennis. Swiatek, 21, has won 64 matches this year, eight titles – including two Grand Slams.
Swiatek has lost just eight matches this year and Garcia has been one of the players that have managed to upset the Pole. In the Warsaw quarterfinal, Garcia upset Swiatek in three sets and went on to win the title. Garcia and Swiatek are now set to meet again, having been drawn in the same group at he WTA Finals.
“WTA Finals is a challenge, but she’s a challenge just by herself. She lost very few matches. I won against her in Poland, but it was very different condition, clay court. She was playing in Poland, and it was probably her first time.
It’s a whole different match for sure. It’s group stage as well. I will try to play my game, be aggressive. That’s my way of playing, and that’s probably the best chance I have to beat her.”
Garcia on returning to the WTA Finals
Garcia, 29, made her WTA Finals debut in 2017.
Back then, Garcia made the semifinal in her first appearance at the prestigious season-ending tournament. After several seasons in which Garcia was struggling with her game, she returned to her best tennis in 2022. As a result, she is playing again at the WTA Finals.
“I would have preferred to come back a little bit earlier, but I’m already glad I’m coming back and I get to live this experience again. It’s a gift after a very tough and very good season, and really proud of the work.
Yes, Singapore was a long time ago. I qualified last-minute and very unexpected. I’m not going to say this one was expected. It’s kind of the same situation,” Garcia said.
