1996 Australian Open women’s doubles champion Chanda Rubin thinks Serena Williams will make a return to pro tennis in 2023. Williams, who turned 41 in September, put an end to her astonishing career after the US Open. Rubin, who also made the semifinal in the 1996 Australian Open singles event, was asked on Tennis Channel to give her hot take for 2023.

“I think Serena Williams, we have not seen the last of her on the tennis court, she will be back in 2023 – at an event, a live event, I’m saying it now, not an exho. I don’t have any inside information. I just think when we saw her at the US Open, she just looked like, ‘You know what, maybe I could do this again, maybe I could do some more of this.’

She played her way into such good form by the end of her tournament and that was with very few matches under her belt. So I think if she did just a little more she could come back and be pretty proud of what she could accomplish,” Rubin said on Tennis Channel.

Williams raised her level at the US Open

Williams was out for 12 months before making her singles return at Wimbledon. In the Wimbledon first round, Williams was beaten by Harmony Tan. Williams then played in Toronto, where she defeated Nuria Parrizas-Diaz before losing to Belinda Bencic.

In her next tournament, Williams easily lost to Emma Raducanu in the Cincinnati first round. Williams didn’t really look good in her first three tournaments in 2022 and she came to New York with a 1-3 record on the season.

But after losing to Raducanu in Cincinnati, Williams returned to the practice court and did some major work before the US Open. At Flushing Meadows, Williams defeated Danka Kovinic in her opener before beating Anett Kontaveit – the Estonian who at the time was the second-ranked player in the world.

In the third round, Williams put up a big fight against Ajla Tomljanovic but the 2022 Wimbledon quarterfinalist escaped with a three-set win. Williams performed well at the US Open and that’s why Rubin and some others feel the American tennis icon may be tempted to return to tennis.
