  • Broadcasting rights bring in US$3.1bn
  • TOP sponsorship programme rakes in US$835.6m

The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) financial statement for 2021 shows that the organisation saw its revenue in the 2017 to 2020/21 cycle increase to US$7.6 billion, up from US$5.7 billion in the previous Olympiad.

For 2021, the IOC said it recognised US$4.2 billion in total revenue, courtesy of the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Games.

Total assets at 31st December 2021 were US$5.6 billion compared to US$5.7 billion in 2020. Cash and cash equivalents of current assets were US$548.9 million, down from US$866.6 million at the end of 2020.

The IOC’s The Olympic Partner (TOP) worldwide sponsorship programme brought in US$835.6 million in revenue for 2021. Television broadcasting rights pulled in US$3.1 billion.

The organisation added that it had supported the Olympic Movement with the equivalent of US$4.2 million per day for 365 days a year in the entire 2017 to 2020/21 Olympiad, compared to US$3.4 million per day in the previous period.

The IOC also hailed Tokyo 2020 as ‘the most digital Games ever’, stating that a total of 3.05 billion unique viewers tuned in to coverage across linear TV and digital platforms. Official coverage on Olympic broadcast partners’ digital platforms alone generated 28 billion video views in total.

“Looking ahead, we can address both the immediate and the long-term future from a position of strength,” said IOC president Thomas Bach (pictured above). “In such uncertain times, navigating the Olympic Movement into this strong position was by no means a foregone conclusion.

“This was only possible because of what we achieved with our Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms and what is already taking shape with our Olympic Agenda 2020+5. The huge success of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 also contributed greatly to this.”
