Tennis Channel analysts Chanda Rubin and Paul Annacone are rooting for Juan Martin del Potro to be able to compete at this year’s Us Open. Just a couple of days ago, del Potro revealed he was planning to resume training and see how his body would react.

If everything goes right, del Potro would try to compete at the US Open, where he captured his lone Grand Slam title in 2019. “If he can get back healthy close enough, to help where he can produce a really good effort at the US Open, I think that would be fantastic for everybody, for fans and for him as well.

You wanna be able to leave on your terms, that’s always the tough part with injuries. We saw at this event [2022 Argentina Open], he was kind of a shadow of himself because of the movement and I think that is what makes it tough,” Rubin said on Tennis Channel.

Annacone: Let’s hope for a smoother run for del Potro

“This guy has sadly missed and one of the players that unfortunately battled so many injuries in his career. So, let’s hope for a smoother run for Mr. Del Potro,” Annacone said on Tennis Channel.

Del Potro, 34, became a Grand Slam champion at the 2009 US Open but shortly after that started experiencing major injury issues. “I think it’s just so tough when you have that road that del Potro had. He’s one of those guys who could’ve won many more Majors with his game,” Rubin added.

At the Queen’s Club in 2019, del Potro suffered another major knee injury. After being out for two and a half years, del Potro returned for just one tournament – he picked Buenos Aires as the tournament where he wanted to retire.

In 2022 February, del Potro suffered a first-round defeat to Federico Delbonis in the Buenos Aires first round. It remains to be seen if del Potro will indeed make a return to tennis later this year.
