Daniil Medvedev says Rafael Nadal will be a French Open title favorite as long as he participates in the tournament. Nadal, a record 14-time French Open champion, hasn’t played since the Australian Open and he was forced to withdraw from the Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open at the start of the clay season.

Nadal seems to be in a very challenging situation but Medvedev underlines the Spaniard can never be counted out at Roland Garros. Also, Nadal is now ranked at No 15 in the world, which opens the door for the Spaniard to meet top players earlier in the French Open draw.

“Rafa isn’t well ranked, I might meet him before, but I believe he will play French Open, although I’m not in his body. I don’t want to talk for him. He won 14 times this Grand Slam, so he will be the favorite,” Medvedev said, via The Tennis Letter.

Medvedev says Nadal cannot be counted out at the French Open

Nadal’s record at the French Open is one of the most impressive and astonishing things in all sports.

Last year, Nadal won his 14th French Open title after beating Casper Ruud 6-3 6-3 6-0 in the final. Recently, Ruud explained in detail why Nadal is such a nightmare opponent at Roland Garros. “If you want to beat Rafa at Roland-Garros, when you are going out to the match, you are thinking, ‘OK, I’m going to have to play the best match of my life for at least four-and-a-half hours because even though I’m playing great, he will play unbelievable back’ If I play well, he [Nadal] plays well, so it’s going to be a long match.

Not many players are prepared to do that I think and that’s why you have seen some of the clay court players be so successful on clay,” Ruud said on Eurosport’s Ruud Talk podcast. It will be interesting to see how prepared Nadal will arrive at the French Open.
