Dodgers Roster News: LA Designates Catcher Austin Wynns for Assignment

After a 6-3 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, the Dodgers reportedly made a roster move. Catcher Austin Wynns has been designated for assignment. J.P. Hoornstra reported the news.

Wynns has spent the better part of nearly three weeks with the club while Will Smith was sidelined with a concussion. With Smith back on the active roster and having come out of his first start at catcher with presumably no lingering effects. He went 1-3 (double) with an RBI and a run scored.

The veteran Wynns, 32, went 2-11 with a walk in 5 games starting alongside Austin Barnes.

Wynns opened the season with the Giants before being DFA’d then released on April 14th. The Dodgers came calling when Smith hit the IL. Famously, Wynns was back home in Nashville and making dinner with his family.

It wasn’t likely that the Dodgers would carry three catchers and, as soon as they felt comfortable with Smitty behind the dish, they made the move. Now the club has one spot on the active roster open. As for what the plan is with it, we likely won’t know for certain until midday on Monday at the latest. Considering they’ll need to replace him with a position player, the move should mean the return of Miguel Rojas off the 10-day IL.

Rojas just completed a 2 game rehab stint with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes where he went 2-6 with a home run.
