Aston Villa join race to sign free agent Youri Tielemans

Aston Villa have joined the race to sign free agent Youri Tielemans.

The 26-year-old midfielder left Leicester City at the end of last season after his contract expired.

Villa manager Unai Emery would like a move to be completed quickly after missing out on a midfield target in the January transfer window.

Tielemans joined Leicester from AS Monaco, initially on loan in January 2019, before the move was made permanent six months later.

The Belgium international made 195 appearances for Leicester during his four years at the King Power, helping guide the side to consecutive fifth-place finishes in 2019 and 2020, and played a key role in his former side’s FA Cup triumph in 2021, scoring the winner against Chelsea at Wembley.

A number of clubs, including some of Villa’s Premier League rivals are also interested in signing the former Anderlecht midfielder.

Villa have had previous success with free agent signings, especially with Boubacar Kamara who has played a starring role for the side this season.

The club are expected to make an approach for Tielemans soon.
