UConn expels students for vandalism after NCAA basketball win

The University of Connecticut has begun expelling students for damage caused across the campus during celebrations for their basketball team’s NCAA championship victory back in April.

“Although we can’t address individual students’ outcomes, we can say that some reviews have concluded with expulsions,” UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said in a statement Friday.

Reitz added that separate investigations are still ongoing for others arrested in connection to vandalism at the Storrs campus, where students had smashed windows and damaged a police vehicle.

The championship game saw the Huskies beat San Diego State University 76-59, securing UConn’s fifth NCAA title in the past 24 years.

The majority of the celebrations which followed were peaceful, but specific instances saw campus signs and light poles pulled down, a van flipped on its side and a campus police cruiser damaged.

University officials said the vandalism amounted to thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Over a dozen students were arrested in the mayhem and 16 others were taken to the hospital for various injuries.

Reitz said further information regarding the total number of students expelled and their role in the wreckage would be released later this summer.

Students are allowed to appeal their expulsions, Reitz said. Some have already attempted an appeal and their enrollment has still been terminated.
