Chelsea believe that Ajax’s Edson Alvarez could be a fantastic midfield partner for Enzo Fernandez at Stamford Bridge.

That is according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

It is explained that Chelsea are now interested in signing Edson Alvarez, 25, during this summer transfer window.

The report says that Blues data has even indicated Ajax’s combative defensive midfielder could work really effectively next to Enzo Fernandez.

The Times also claimed this week that Alvarez has emerged as a possible midfield target for Chelsea in the final month of the transfer window.

So, will the Blues decide to ramp up interest in the Mexico international?

Alvarez, who’s an aggressive defensive midfielder, would be an intriguing addition to the Chelsea ranks.

The combative midfielder picked up 16 yellow cards in 44 appearances last season to highlight his mean streak. He’s certainly got a lot of quality, too!

It does feel like Chelsea are searching for the right partner to play alongside Fernandez in the centre of the park. Ideally, we would prefer a more defensive-minded option that can allow the 22-year-old Argentine to express himself more on the ball for the Blues.

Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is a player strongly linked in the transfer rumour mill with a switch to Chelsea, but perhaps Alvarez from Ajax is a seriously underrated option now on the shortlist.

Hopefully, Mauricio Pochettino’s side can bring in a new senior midfield option before the season begins in a couple of weeks time because right now it looks a little light.
