Warner Bros. Discovery eyeing up MotoGP for a new documentary series

While the British Grand Prix might not have been exactly what Jake Dixon was hoping for, his comments to TNT Sports (previously BT Sport) post race may be exactly what Warner Bros. Discovery are looking for.

Intriguing developments within the MotoGP paddock suggest that Warner Bros. Discovery is actively considering the launch of a documentary series. Reflective of the four wheeled counterpart F1 series, “Drive to Survive.” the content owner and distributor conglomerate aims to rekindle the enthusiasm of motorsport fans with an immersive behind-the-scenes look at MotoGP.

According to a well-placed source in the paddock, Warner Bros. Discovery’s executive board was present in the paddock over the course of the British Grand Prix and is particularly keen on featuring a British rider as a central figure in the proposed series. Such a move would undoubtedly resonate with British viewers, adding a significant local appeal to the international audience. Jake Dixon’s name, now in the spotlight, has emerged as a potential focal point for the documentary, thanks to his nationality and the controversial remarks he made about Darren Binder’s role in taking him out mid race. Although it may have been a bit crass, It’s something that feels real and authentic, resonating with viewers.

In 2021, Dorna Sports embarked on an ambitious endeavour to replicate the triumphant formula of “Drive to Survive” with the launch of “MotoGP Unlimited” on Amazon. However, despite high expectations, the project faced numerous challenges and, regrettably, did not achieve the desired success. It fell short of capturing the hearts of motorsport enthusiasts and was ultimately deemed a disappointment, putting the business at a loss.

In 2023, GreenLight Productions struck gold with “No Room for Error” at the 2022 Isle of Man TT. The four-part documentary series became a sensation, receiving rave reviews and immense praise worldwide. Despite operating on a very modest budget compared to illustrious counterparts like “Drive to Survive,” the series showcased the raw and authentic essence of road racing, resonating deeply with audiences. Its genuine approach and accessibility proved that a compelling story doesn’t necessarily require an opulent production, solidifying its place as a groundbreaking success in the motorsport documentary landscape.

It is understood that media giant Warner Bros. Discovery now seeks to take matters into their own hands. Intent on producing a fresh and captivating documentary series entered around MotoGP, the conglomerate will most likely choose to pursue this venture independently, without entangling themselves in any production rights agreement with Dorna outside of paddock and garage access.
