Wales fly-half Dan Biggar makes retirement call ahead of Rugby World Cup :

Wales and British and Irish Lions fly-half Dan Biggar has announced that he will retire from international rugby after the Rugby World Cup.

The 33-year-old playmaker is set to continue his playing career in France with Top 14 outfit Toulon.

Biggar confirms his international retirement

Biggar has played 109 Test matches for Wales and has been on two British and Irish Lions tours, starting all three Tests against South Africa in 2021.

In a video posted to social media on Saturday evening, he announced his decision, saying, “Hi guys, Dan Biggar here. Just wanted to share some news with you that in my column for the Mail on Sunday, tomorrow I will be announcing my retirement with Wales post-World Cup. Find out the reasons why and have a bit more of a read tomorrow morning.”

The 2023 World Cup will be Biggar’s third tournament appearance after featuring for Wales during the 2015 and 2019 showpiece events.

He has also won three Six Nations titles with Wales and a Grand Slam.

Last year, he also captained his country during their tour to South Africa, where the side claimed their first-ever victory over the Springboks in South Africa.

Joins other Wales retirees

He joins an ever-growing list of Welsh internationals who have decided to hang up their boots in 2023.

Ahead of the World Cup, lock Alun Wyn Jones, flankers Justin Tipuric and Josh Navidi and scrum-half Rhys Webb all hung up their Test boots, with Navidi retiring from professional rugby as well.

Biggar will continue his career with Toulon, whom he joined midway through the 2022/23 season from Northampton Saints, helping the side to win the European Challenge Cup trophy.

The former Ospreys pivot heads into his final tournament as Wales’ first-choice number 10.

Warren Gatland’s charges kick off their campaign against Fiji on September 10. They then face Portugal, Australia and Georgia as they look to navigate through Pool C.
