2021 Olympics: U.S. women’s gymnastics, roster, schedule, medal contenders

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team will attempt to win all-around team gold for the third consecutive Games when it competes at the Tokyo Olympics from July 24-Aug. 3.

The U.S. has reached the podium in the team competition at the last seven Summer Games, including gold medals in Atlanta in 1996, London in 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016. This year, five-time medalist Simone Biles is the lone returnee from the 2016 squad, dubbed the “Final Five.”

Only four countries — the U.S., Russia, China and Romania — have medaled in the team competition at the last six Games. Russia took silver and China took bronze in 2016.

In individual competitions, Biles will look to defend her gold medals in all-around, vault and floor. An American woman has won all-around gold at the last four Games (Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin, Gabby Douglas and Biles).

The competition will take place at Ariake Gymnastics Centre.

Athletes to watch

Simone Biles: The 24-year-old, with eponymous skills on vault, beam and floor exercise, can add to her claim as the most dominant gymnast of all time with a superlative performance in Tokyo. Biles won four golds (team, all-around, vault and floor) and one bronze (beam) at Rio in 2016.

The record for Olympic medals by an American women’s gymnast is seven, set by Shannon Miller (five in 1992, two in 1996). Biles is undefeated in all-around competitions since March 2013.

Suni Lee: She stood out at U.S. trials in June, placing second behind Biles but posting a higher overall score on the second night. The 18-year-old was the top scorer on the bars and beam in St. Louis.

Jordan Chiles: The 20-year-old was second on the bars, third on the floor and third all-around at U.S. trials.
