Is this Nebraska’s greatest volleyball season?

John Baylor boarded the Nebraska team flight to Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday. The adventure continues.

This is Baylor’s 30th year as the radio voice for Husker volleyball. He’s seen it all. The great players. The classic matches. The history.

What exactly are we watching now?

The question — as the No. 1 Huskers prepare to meet Pittsburgh in the NCAA Final Four — made the volleyball man pause.

“I like to say we’re in year nine of the golden age of Nebraska Volleyball,” Baylor said.

“In those nine years, there’s been unprecedented success: six final fours, two national titles, two runners-up. From my vantage point, we haven’t had that before.

“Now we’ve had the stadium match, the greatest regular-season match I’ve ever witnessed (Wisconsin), the comeback at Penn State, a regional final that could have gone either way. I think what we’re seeing is the unique combination of talent and belief.”

I love talking to Baylor because of his passion, knowledge and sense of history of what he’s narrating from his Devaney Center perch.

He’s had a front row seat, from the buses to the arenas, of one of the greatest stories ever told at Nebraska.

And he makes a good authority to ask: If the 2023 Huskers close the deal on Sunday, are they the greatest team in program history?

Was this the greatest season?

“I think you’d be hard-pressed to say this is the most talented Husker team on paper,” Baylor said.

“This may be the greatest chemistry, the closest team we’ve ever seen. Talent can only take you so far, especially in volleyball. Chemistry is probably more important in this sport than any other sport. This group has loved each other since January.”

For instance, Baylor says the team that you see on the court — like one big group of sisters — is the same everywhere else.

“They have a great time on the road,” Baylor said. “On the buses, cracking jokes, yelling from the back of the bus. There were a lot of teams where it was silent back there, people with headphones on.”

Baylor makes a good point here. It’s hard to compare or rank the greatness of all the Nebraska teams. Where do you start?

But this team has something we haven’t often seen. This bunch has a knack of making tough matches look like a slumber party. They’re having so much fun out there.

And that connection leads to a larger, broader connection: With the fans.

Have Husker fans enjoyed watching another Nebraska team more than this one? It’s hard to imagine.

Certainly no Nebraska volleyball team has been watched more than this one, from the attendance records in person to the TV audience. Every match this year felt like appointment TV.
