Canelo vs David Benavidez is the fight that all fans are waiting for and the World Boxing Council is working to make it happen.
This was reiterated again by its president, Mauricio Sulaiman, in an interview granted to ProBox TV in the presence of former Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez, who in the past has been very critical ofSaul Alvarez for dodging the challenge of his compatriot for the super middleweight world title.

“March 2024 is Benavidez‘s deadline, before that no injustice has been done,” he reflected.
“Benavidez decides to make a fight against Demetrius Andrade and is put that he will be ratified as official challenger, he wins it, proves he has the merits and is the official challenger for Canelo.
“Between now and May there are six months to go, so we are in the process, the parties are talking, but Benavidez is definitely the official challenger and the Council is clear in that sense and will carry out the process to make the fight happen.”
What happens if Canelo says no?
The WBC president did not want to enter into speculation about what would happen in case Canelo does not accept the fight with the challenger Benavidez.
Sulaiman is confident that it will happen, and only asks for patience to close the deal.
“I’m not going to get into speculation or ‘what if this’ or ‘what if this doesn’t’,” he insisted.
“The Council has Benavidez as a mandator. When there are mandatories it is common for there to be an agreement and fights are carried out.
“Benavidez has not been waiting a year and a half, he has made millions of dollars winning and defending his interim title, knowing the process he must take for the big fight.
“I ask for a little openness in understanding that no rules have been broken and Benavidez has benefited in this case.”
The fight boxing needs
This is not the first time Sulaiman has stressed the importance of the Canelo-Benavidez fight taking place in 2024.
A few weeks ago, the leader admitted that “it is the fight that boxing needs.”
“Canelo has never shied away from a fight, he is a boxer who has been at the top for more than 12 years, he has fought the best,” he added.
“I want to recognize that Benavidez is the best challenger that ‘Canelo‘ can have and that it is the fight that everyone wants to see.”
