How former Nebraska prep stars faring in college basketball

The pastures have been greener for at least four of the nine players from Nebraska high schools who transferred between Division I schools for this season.

Hunter Sallis especially.

The two-time All-Nebraska pick and five-star recruit from Millard North, after two years in a reserve role at Gonzaga, is leading Wake Forest (8-3) in scoring at 18 points a game.

His dunks are making him a fan favorite. Just Thursday, he threw down two against Presbyterian.

John Dell of the Winston-Salem Journal, one of The World-Herald’s sister newspapers, wrote that in a half-court set, Sallis got the ball on the left wing, did a quick ball fake, went to the basket and tomahawked a one-handed dunk.

“I’ve seen some big-time dunks in my day,” Forbes said. “I was in the slot in the coaching box and I didn’t see that coming. Man, that was nasty.”

The second by Sallis was on a lob pass to finish off a fast break.

Shereef Mitchell, Saint Thomas and Josiah Allick also have been locked into their new school’s lineups as the season progresses to the conference portion in earnest after Christmas.

Mitchell, from Omaha Burke, has started nine of 10 games for Ohio, averaging 13.6 points, after transferring from Creighton.

Thomas, from Millard North, had been at Loyola in Chicago for two years. Now at Northern Colorado, he’s averaging a double-double of 18.7 points and 11.3 rebounds.

Allick, from Lincoln North Star, has started 10 times for NU (10-2) while averaging 6.7 points and 5.1 rebounds.

John Tonjes (Omaha Central, Colorado State to Missouri), Jay Pal (Central, Campbell to San Diego State), Isaac Traudt (Grand Island, Virginia to Creighton), Latrell Wrightsell (Central, Cal State Fullerton to Alabama) and Lok Wor (Papillion-La Vista South, Oregon to Grand Canyon) are the other transfers.

In all, there are 33 from Nebraska on Division I men’s teams and 24 on women’s teams. There are 13 men and nine women who have started a majority of their games.
