Creighton volleyball coach on transfer portal tampering

Cheaters never win, and winners never cheat. That’s the world Kirsten Bernthal Booth wants to live in.

Booth, shortly after the end of her 21st season as Creighton’s volleyball coach, recently attended a national coaching convention.

The trip shined a light on some of the sport’s biggest issues when it comes to the NCAA. Booth did the same Wednesday night on social media, directly pointing at tampering in recruiting before posing a question.

“Is this what we want our sport to be?” Booth wrote via X, formerly known as Twitter. “Do we want to follow in the steps of some other high profile sports that have this reputation? Is cheating the rules to win what we want to role model?”

Then, for anyone not up to speed, Booth provided a few examples.

One mentioned a college coach calling an athlete’s club or high school coach and indirectly offering a scholarship. Another talked about college coaches having their current athletes do the recruiting.

Booth’s final method of tampering explained how athletes can ask their club or high school coaches to call on their behalf. All coaches, Booth wrote, are aware they can’t give out any information on scholarships, NIL or anything in between until someone is officially in the NCAA transfer portal.

“Yet we are seeing players telling other coaches they have made their decision minutes after entering the portal,” Booth wrote. “This is also tampering.”

Booth’s call to action asked coaches to do better, especially the top-tier ones. She wants to see her peers role model that cheating the system to win isn’t the right way to do things. And parents, coaches and athletes should all know — and follow — the rules.

“We have an amazing sport that is growing exponentially and continues to become higher profile,” Booth wrote. “We are at a pivotal point in the direction our sport goes.”
