Aston Villa agree Morgan Rogers transfer with Middlesbrough

Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough.

The Premier League side will pay an initial £8million plus a further £7m in possible add-ons for Rogers, who is now travelling to the Midlands for a medical ahead of signing a five-and-a-half-year deal until 2029. Manchester City, Rogers’ former club, stand to gain as part of the deal due to a 25 per cent sell-on clause they hold after selling the 21-year-old to Middlesbrough in the summer.

Rogers emerged as the the primary target for Unai Emery in the January transfer window with Villa having two offers rejected. He has made 33 appearances across all competitions for Michael Carrick’s side this campaign, including 14 starts in the Championship.

He began his career at West Brom but was signed by City in the summer of 2019.

Rogers had loan spells at Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool before making a permanent switch to Middlesbrough last summer.

Rogers, who has primarily been deployed in an attacking midfield role by the Championship side this campaign, has represented England’s youth teams up to under-20 level.

Villa are next in action against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
