Volleyball today: Hawai’i sweeps, busy men’s Friday on tap; PVF’s Columbus,

Third-ranked Hawai’i routed visiting independent Missouri S&T on Thursday to improve to 11-1. The Rainbow Warriors were the only ranked teams in action on day with three NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball matches.

In the Pro Volleyball Federation, Wednesday the Columbus Fury beat the Omaha Supernovas in four and Thursday the Orlando Valkyries won in four at the Vegas Thrill. Friday’s PVF schedule has the Grand Rapids Rise at the San Diego Mojo.

The coaching carousel spun at the women’s programs at Grand Canyon and Youngstown State.

Also, the NCAA beach season got underway Thursday and preseason No. 7 Stanford upset three-time defending-champion USC in Hawai’i. It was the first time Stanford beat USC and the Cardinal also knocked off No. 5 Loyola Marymount. We’ll have a recap of the first week of beach play and look ahead on Monday. 

Friday men

Hawai’i leads four Big West teams in action as the Rainbow Warriors play host to Missouri S&T again, No. 1 Long Beach State is home for Lewis of the MIVA, No. 5 UC Irvine is home for the MPSF’s Concordia Irvine, and in a league match, No. 18 UC Santa Barbara is at No. 20 UC San Diego.

There are three MPSF matches when second-ranked and unbeaten Grand Canyon is at No. 10 USC, No. 4 UCLA plays at No. 9 BYU, and No 6 Stanford is at No. 11 Pepperdine.

There are four MIVA matches with No. 7 Ohio State at Queens, No. 12 Loyola Chicago at Lindenwood, No. 13 Ball State at Quincy and McKendree at Purdue Fort Wayne.

In the EIVA, the three conference matches have No. 9 Penn State home for NJIT, No. 14 Princeton at Harvard and No. 17 George Mason at Charleston.

There are three Conference Carolinas matches with Belmont Abbey at Lees-McRae, Emmanuel at Barton and Erskine at Mount Olive. King plays host to Xavier.

The NEC’s three matches have No. 20 Daemen home for Fairleigh Dickinson, LIU at D’Youville and Saint Francis (PA) at Sacred Heart.

The SIAC’s Morehouse plays Life and the ECC’s St. Thomas and Dominican square off.

Thursday men

Hawai’i made Missouri S&T’s first Honolulu match a short one, hitting .492 and winning 25-12, 25-12, 25-20. Alaka’i Todd led UH with 15 kills and had one error in 21 attacks to go with an ace, two blocks and three digs. Keoni Thiim had nine kills with two errors in nine attacks, two assists, an ace, three digs and three blocks, one solo. Chaz Galloway had seven kills wiht one error in 10 swings, two blocks and two digs. Missouri S&T (8-7) hit .053 … 

Georgetown of Kentucky swept the SIAC’s Central State, which fell to 0-15, and Barton (6-4) of Conference Carolinas swept Warner.
