By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Volleyball Association (BVA) sent out a warning to Belize volleyball teams and players not to play in the international Copa Cancun 2024 as the tournament isn’t officially sanctioned.

“We have been informed by the volleyball governing bodies in Mexico, that the Copa Cancun 2024 tournament, presently scheduled for the 17th to 19th May 2024, is not sanctioned or approved by the Quintana Roo Volleyball Association and therefore not by the Mexican Volleyball Federation,” the notice from the BVA to ‘Belize Volleyball Athletes, Teams, and Clubs’ said.

The Copa Cancun is a tournament, held in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico, in which Belizean volleyballers compete annually. The BVA said it regretted to advise the players and teams not compete in the Copa Cancun but said that Belizean teams and players should follow the rules and regulations established by the international organizations the BVA belongs to. Additionally, the BVA said that BVA members should respect the decision of the governing organizations of other countries, in this case those of Mexico.

The tournament is organized by the Liga Premier Voleibol Cancún (LPVC).

“Unfortunately, since the Copa Cancun 2024 Tournament is not sanctioned or approved by the volleyball governing bodies of their state or country, Belizean volleyball athletes, teams, and clubs are not authorized to participate in the Copa Cancun 2024 Tournament,” the BVA statement added.

The BVA received word from President of Volleyball Association of Quintana Roo (ASOVOL) that the Copa Cancun 2024 wasn’t endorsed and sanctioned by ASOVOL because they weren’t adhering to the rules and requirements.

The BVA said that at the last AFECAVOL (Association of Volleyball Federations of Central America) general assembly, member countries were advised that their athletes and teams are to adhere to ‘proper protocol … when participating outside their country’.

“Belizean athletes and teams are to refrain from participating in the Copa Cancun 2024 tournament and avoid the risk of penalty and suspension of participation in volleyball tournaments locally and internationally,” the BVA warned the teams and players.

“We must abide by the rules and regulations set out by our international bodies and respect the governing organizations of other countries.”
