Former UNC basketball player James Okonkwo finds a new home

Just over a week ago, James Okonkwo entered his name into the transfer portal.

Okonkwo was originally a late addition to the UNC basketball program’s roster for the 2023-2024 season, having transferred from West Virginia. The Maidenhead, England native became the third Tar Heel ever to come from England, and the hope is that he will be a depth piece in the frontcourt.

However, Okonkwo couldn’t carve out a role in the UNC basketball program’s rotation, as he was limited to just 15 games while averaging just under three minutes per-contest.

Now, just a little over a week after entering the transfer portal, Okonkwo has found a new home.

After making official visits to campus, it was announced that Okonkwo, along with West Virginia transfer Seth Wilson, will take their talents to Akron for the upcoming 2024-2025 season. The Zips currently play in the Mid-American Conference East division.

Okonkwo is an athletic big man who can be a force on the defensive side of the ball, as he should fit in nicely with his new team. If he earns a bigger role, it’s possible that his offensive game could become more a factor, as he’s currently known for being a good rim protector and shot blocker.

Although it didn’t work out in Chapel Hill for Okonkwo, the hope is that the third time’s a charm (transfer wise) for this international student-athlete.
