No. 2 UCLA Advances to Winner’s Bracket Semifinal

LOS ANGELES — No. 2 UCLA (30-5) advanced to the semifinals of the Pac-12 Championship with a 3-0 win over seventh-seeded and 18th-ranked Arizona (20-11) on Wednesday morning at ASU’s Sun Devil Beach Volleyball Facility. The Bruins improved to 13-2 all-time against the Wildcats with their 1th-straight win in the series..

Graduate student Devon Newberry and senior Peri Brennan put the first point on the board from court two with an easy 21-9, 21-13 win over Arizona’s Annie Kost and Hope Shannon.

Graduate student Jaden Whitmarsh and senior Tessa Van Winkle put UCLA up 2-0 with a hard-fought straight-set win on court four over Jess Horwath and Kate Phillips, 21-19, 21-19.

The Bruins’ pair of graduate student Lexy Denaburg and sophomore Maggie Boyd clinched the dual win over the Wildcats’ Abby Russell and Olivia McElroy, 21-11, 21-8. With the win, Denaburg tied the UCLA all-time career wins record of 128 established by Abby Van Winkle last year.

UP NEXT: The Bruins will face No. 3 and third-seeded Stanford tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. PT in a winner’s bracket semifinal live on the Pac-12 Networks. The Cardinal is 2-1 against the Bruins this year with its most-recent win over UCLA being at ASU in the Pac-12 South Invitational back on March 8 by a score of 3-2. In fact, all three of the duals this year have been decided by a 3-2 final.
