The eyes of the golf world will be on Muirfield Village Golf Club beginning Thursday morning.

Starting at 7 a.m. Thursday, the first round of the 2023 Memorial Tournament will tee off, with seven of the top 10 golfers in the Official World Golf Rankings fighting for a share of the $20 million purse including No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, No. 2 Jon Rahm, No. 3 Rory McIlroy and No. 4 Patrick Cantlay.

Danny Willett complimentary of Muirfield Village course, weather during 2023 Memorial first round

Danny Willett was one of the first golfers to complete their first round, leaving Muirfield Village Golf Club three strokes under par.

After his first-round performance, Willett said the course was playing well, even with the hot temperatures and the dry course.

“Especially this morning you could still, if you were in the fairway, you could still stop it the quite nicely with a mid iron,” Willett said, who was a part of the first group that took the course at 7 a.m. “And you could spin back a wedge if you caught it real good. Most of that is due to the slopes around the flags. Really fair. You hit good shots you can make birdie. You hit bad shots and you’re really struggling to kind of make par. So I assume, as every year when we come back to Jack’s (Nicklaus) place, that it just kind of gets progressively tougher as the week goes on.”

Mark Hubbard takes top spot during 2023 Memorial first round

Mark Hubbard is at the top of the Memorial Tournament leaderboard 14 holes into his first round.

Back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 brought Hubbard in front of Matt Wallace for the tournament lead at -6.

Through 14 holes, Hubbard has seven birdies, six pars and a bogey,.

Dylan Frittelli withdraws from Memorial Tournament

After six straight holes recording at least a bogey, Dylan Frittelli has withdrawn from the Memorial Tournament.

Starting even through the first three holes of the first round, Fritelli finished with nine bogeys, including double-bogeys on holes 9, 12 and 14, and triple-bogeys on holes 10 and 8.

Frittelli had played in two previous Memorial Tournaments, placing 22nd in 2020.

Matt Wallace relinquishes lead after missed putt

Leading the field at -5 coming into the 12th hole, by the time Matt Wallace teed off on hole No. 13, his lead was gone. 

Wallace missed a putt from seven feet, nine inches on par, tapping it in from two feet for a bogey.

As a result, Wallace is tied with Danny Willett and Keith Wallace at the top of the leaderboard.
