Peoria’s Aaliyah Guyton commits to Iowa

PEORIA ― Aaliyah Guyton is a Hawkeye.

The Peoria High girls basketball star announced her verbal commitment to Iowa in front of family and friends at Que For You restaurant on Monday night. She’ll head to Iowa City after her senior season, picking the 2023 NCAA national runner-up from a final five teams of Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan State and Pittsburgh.

Guyton revealed her selection after unzipping her black jacket and lowering it to reveal the Hawkeyes logo and “IOWA” across the back of a white T-shirt. Prior to that, she thanked her family, teammates and coaches during a speech while standing at the front of the restaurant.

Guyton, who is No. 57 on the ESPN 2024 HoopGurlz recruiting rankings, was the 2023 Journal Star girls basketball player of the year. The 5-foot-7 point guard is a four-star prospect, averaging 21.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists during her junior season. Peoria High was the Class 3A third-place finisher.
