Saracens’ verdict on Billy Vunipola’s Majorca incident, RFU could intervene :

Saracens have concluded their internal investigation into Billy Vunipola’s arrest in Majorca and will take no further action.

Vunipola was tasered twice by Spanish police after arriving at a bar in the island’s capital, Palma, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Early reports said that the back-rower had threatened violence towards staff and patrons at the bar.

Saracens take no further action

Vunipola “unreservedly” apologised in a statement addressing the reports adding there was “no violence” during the incident.

Upon returning to Saracens, he met with senior club officials who have decided to to take no further action against their player.

“Saracens can confirm that after an internal investigation, Billy Vunipola will face no further action from the club,” a club statement read.

“We condemn the behaviour and have warned Billy about his future conduct.

“We now look forward to the remainder of the Gallagher Premiership season, and consider this case closed.”

While Saracens have moved on from the incident, it is reported that the RFU could still take action against Vunipola.

A report from The Times states that the “RFU will consider whether Vunipola should be charged with bringing the game into disrepute.”

How the RFU could sanction Vunipola

However, they will only make their decision once Saracens have shared their findings of their internal investigation later this week.

The RFU can sanction Vunipola under clause 5.12 of the RFU Rules:

The Union shall have power to discipline any: Member; Rugby Body; non-voting member of the Union; any player, official, member or employee of a Member or a Rugby Body; or any other person or body that submits to Union’s jurisdiction to discipline them; for any infringement of these Rules, the RFU Regulations, the Laws of the Game or the World Rugby Regulations and/or for any conduct which is prejudicial to the interests of the Union or the Game or which amounts to cheating.

The Union may terminate or suspend membership of the Union or impose any other appropriate punishment for any such offence. The procedure for and the conduct of disciplinary hearings shall be prescribed by the Council and shall be published in the Handbook.

The RFU used the above rule to punish Danny Cipriani in 2018 when he was arrested in Jersey. He was fined £2,000.
