Ask most football fans what they know about Samu Omorodion and they’ll tell you – not much. But Chelsea are very keen on him, perhaps more than we previously realised.
That’s what Ben Jacobs things. The well connected Chelsea writer was on our writer Simon Phillips’ podcast today in a really interesting transfer special. A lot of topics have been covered before elsewhere, but the subject of Samu is a really interesting one which seems to be gradually becoming a priority.
The Atletico Madrid striker is not a big name – he spent last year grafting on loan at relegation threatened Alaves – but he’s got a lot of potential, and his club don’t want to let him go. According to Jacobs, there have already been bids from Chelsea, who “really like” the powerful forward. One of these offers was apparently “as much as £45m.”
A big number for a big bloke
That’s a huge amount to pay for a relatively unproven player, showing just how much we must rate him. The idea still seems to be that he’s a similar profile to Nicolas Jackson and can rotate and compete with him, although they do also have some different qualities.
Also mentioned is Jonathan David, who has been linked with a Premier League move for years without anything happening. It seems, once again, that he’s a backup option that we’re willing to call on if other deals don’t work out, but he doesn’t sound like a priority at all.
Overall, despite the quiet surface, it seems like wheels remain in motion, and big bids like this one for Omorodion are being put in without too much leaking out. While it might not end up being him who joins, it seems impossible we make it to September without at least one significant attacking addition to help out Enzo Maresca.
