Mac McClung transfer: Former Georgetown guard chooses Texas Tech as destination

Former Georgetown guard Mac McClung is transferring to Texas Tech, the ex-Hoyas star announced Wednesday. McClung chose the Red Raiders over a final group of suitors that included Auburn, Memphis, USC, BYU, Arkansas and Wake Forest.

McClung was one of the best sit-out transfers on the market after formally entering the portal and withdrawing from the NBA Draft two weeks ago. He led the Hoyas last season in scoring and steals during a breakout sophomore campaign in which he averaged 15.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. He was one of the few bright spots for an underwhelming Georgetown team before a foot injury derailed his season after just 21 games.

The timing for McClung’s commitment couldn’t be more ideal for Texas Tech after losing Davide Moretti, who this past week announced he was pursuing a professional career overseas. Moretti handled a huge chunk of the ball-handling duties and was the team’s second-leading scorer last season.

It’s uncertain yet whether McClung will be able to make his presence felt immediately for Tech, however. McClung will be a junior next season, meaning he will be required by NCAA policy to sit out the upcoming season unless he’s able to obtain a waiver. He has said he intends to apply for the waiver in an effort to be granted immediate eligibility.

McClung is the third transfer player to join Texas Tech this offseason along with Wichita State’s Jamarius Burton and VCU’s Marcus Santos-Silva, and is joining a highly-regarded incoming recruiting class that ranks ninth at 247Sports and is headlined by four-star prospect Nimari Burnett.
