Breaking: Ivies cancel winter sports

Tonight, the Ivy League has announced that there will be no fall sports this year.

The cancellation obviously includes the hockey programs.

The Ivy League presidents voted earlier this week and the decision was given to the programs today and then released to the public tonight.

While rumors have been swirling all day the first major outlet to put out the information was The Athletic’s Dana O’Neil.

Fortunately for the student-athletes, they will not be losing a year of eligibility.

It remains to be seen whether or not the student athletes will be able to play elsewhere without impacting their NCAA eligibility.

In all likelihood, the logistics of playing elsewhere won’t really work out anyways, so it may be a lost year in terms of hockey.

It will be interesting to see how this impacts the Beanpot. Right now, there hasn’t been anything too definitive about the annual tournament being canceled…but if Harvard can’t play all season, it’s probably not a great idea to jump into a couple of games in February (if the Ivy League would even allow it).

More to come!
