Chris Evert pays tribute to Steffi Graf on 34th anniversary of legendary Golden

Former 18-time Grand Slam champion Chris Evert feels Steffi Graf deserves more credit for her on-court accomplishments and underlined that Graff is definitely one of the greatest players in tennis history. In 1988, Graf pulled off something that was never done before – to win all four Grand Slams and the gold medal at the Olympics in the same calendar year.
After winning all four Grand Slams in 1988, Graf capped off her outstanding season by winning her first gold medal at the Seoul Olympics and completing a Golden Slam. “On this day in 1988, Steffi Graf clinched the first Golden Slam at the Seoul Olympics.
She was the first player, male or female, to accomplish this feat,” the US Open’s post read.

“Not enough credit is given to Steffi. She was relentless in her power game, her movement, her mental strength, and her competitiveness.

Last year, Novak Djokovic had a real shot at winning a Golden Slam.
After winning the first three Grand Slams of the 2021 season, Djokovic arrived to the Tokyo Olympics determined to win his first gold medal. Djokovic was playing great in Tokyo as he easily made the semifinal, but then he suffered a stunning collapse.
In the Tokyo Olympics semifinal, Djokovic was up by a set and a break versus Alexander Zverev, before collapsing and losing the match in three sets. With that loss, Djokovic’s chances of capturing a Golden Slam ended.
But he still had a shot at winning all four Grand Slams in the same calendar year. At the US Open, Djokovic made the final before surprisingly losing in straight sets to Daniil Medvedev. Had Djokovic beaten Medvedev, he would have become the first player in the men’s game since 1969 to win all four Grand Slams in the same year.
