Chelsea set to appoint Monaco technical director Laurence Stewart

Chelsea are set to appoint AS Monaco technical director Laurence Stewart to a role in the revamped set-up at Stamford Bridge.

An agreement is in place between the clubs and with the Englishman for him to join the Premier League side.

Stewart has previously worked with the Red Bull network, RB Leipzig, Everton, Manchester City and the FA.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has previously spoken of his desire to implement a multi-club model with his new side. At Monaco, Stewart has been part of a multi-club set-up, including Belgian side Cercle Bruges.

Speaking to the Training Ground Guru in April 2021, Stewart said: “It’s the beauty of a multi-club model — you can put those principles in all your clubs and speed up the learning of your players if they move between clubs.”

Chelsea are in the process of reworking their football hierarchy following the Boehly-Clearlake Capital takeover from Roman Abramovich in May.

The Athletic reported earlier this month that Chelsea are to appoint Christopher Vivell as their new technical director after his RB Leipzig departure.

Chelsea turned their attentions to Vivell after Red Bull Salzburg’s Christoph Freund rejected the chance to move to the Premier League side.

Chelsea are also appointing Southampton’s Joe Shields as director of recruitment.

Following the Boehly-Clearlake takeover, director Marina Granovskaia left her role at the club. Her exit was shortly followed by that of Petr Cech, the former Chelsea goalkeeper turned technical advisor.

Boehly was named interim sporting director and, alongside co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, oversaw a summer transfer window where Chelsea spent over £250million on new players.

Chelsea are fifth in the Premier League and are back in action on Tuesday, when they face Salzburg in the Champions League.
