Myah Selland signs training camp contract with Minnesota Lynx – Mitchell

SIOUX FALLS — Former South Dakota State forward Myah Selland has signed a training camp contract with the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA.

Selland, a Letcher native who starred at Sanborn Central and played six seasons for the Jackrabbits, was not selected in Monday’s WNBA Draft, where she was considered on the fringe to be a possible third-round pick.

The details of when she will report to the Lynx are still being worked out, Selland said in an interview with Sioux Falls Live on Tuesday, April 11.

Selland was in Sioux Falls visiting with seventh graders at Whittier Middle School as part of contingent of SDSU athletes. The event was organized by the Promising Futures Fund, which works to empower kids in schools with high rates of poverty.

“I loved going to Lynx games,” she said after getting mobbed by kids for autographs. “Just watching the women play in that league, and especially that team, so getting an opportunity to be a little part of that organization is really exciting for me and I’m really looking forward to it.”

She signed the contract with the Lynx on Tuesday morning. The Lynx officially announced it Friday.

“It’s a little surreal to have my name to be a part of that. I’m really excited about the opportunity and to make the most of it,” she said.

A former South Dakota Miss Basketball, the 6-foot Selland played all five positions on the floor for the Jacks during her career. She was twice named the Summit League player of the year, was named to the All-Newcomer team as a freshman, averaged 12.5 points on the Jacks’ Sweet 16 team as a sophomore in 2019, won the conference scoring title in 2021 (19.2 points per game), and finished her career with 2,167 points, 887 rebounds and 452 assists – which rank second, fourth and fifth, respectively, in program history. She also finished with a career shooting line of .515/.386/.766, with 165 career 3-pointers, and was MVP of the 2022 WNIT, which the Jackrabbits won.

This season Selland averaged 16.2 points and 7.6 rebounds in the postseason, leading SDSU to a first round NCAA tournament win over Southern Cal with a signature performance that saw her score 29 points, including 16 in a row at the end of regulation and into overtime.

The Lynx are the closest thing to a hometown professional team for Selland, and they’ve been a successful program. Minnesota won four WNBA titles between 2011 and 2017 under coach Cheryl Reeve, but are coming off a 14-22 season that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time since 2010, Reeve’s first season as coach.

The Lynx had five picks in Monday’s draft, taking Diamond Miller of Maryland with the No. 2 overall pick, and later selecting 6-5 French post Maia Hirsch, UConn’s Dorka Juhasz, South Carolina guard Brea Beal and Virginia Tech forward Taylor Soule, who played against Selland in the NCAA tournament second round.
