Renovations at Valhalla underway ahead of 2024 PGA Championship

There’s just over a year before Louisville hosts its fourth PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Course. Before the course is put into the international spotlight, new ownership is making some changes. First, the clubhouse is getting a makeover. It’s described as having a more “southern style” look, with a white wrap-around porch and white façade. They’ll also add white picket fencing along the drive, completely renovate the agronomy center for the groundskeepers, and add a field for horses towards the front entrance. “So we’re putting a lot into this to try and create a kind of a Kentucky feel,” said Jimmy Kirchdorfer, co-owner of Valhalla.They’ll also add a limestone water feature around the 13th hole. “Limestone, from what I hear, and I’m no expert, but we don’t have bourbon here if it weren’t for the limestone. I guess it cleaned our water and made it great for bourbon,” Kirchdorfer said. “We don’t have the horse industry here because I guess that filtered the water and took out the iron and made for stronger bones for the horses. So limestone is part of the Kentucky heritage.”The new ownership also changed the way the course plays. “It’s more firm, the ball runs out more, the greens are more firm,” Kirchdorfer said. Ryan Ogle, director of the 2024 PGA Championship, said those changes will affect play in next year’s tournament, but in a good way. “Obviously, the event moving to May is the biggest change we’ll see from 2014. This course will play different with the new Zeon Zoysia grass,” Ogle said. “Some of these runoffs, there’s going to be a lot more trouble that comes into play with the fast and firm surfaces.”All of the work is expected to be finished before the end of 2023. Valhalla is set to host the 2024 PGA Championship, May 13-19.
