ACC News and Notes: Joe Girard to Visit Clemson, John Hugley Commits to


PITTSBURGH – Joe Girard is getting closer to finding a new destination for his final year of eligibility, while former Pitt big man John Hugley landed at Oklahoma. Multiple moves were made by players entering the portal and looking for new places to spend their collegiate careers.

Joe Girard to Visit Clemson Over the Weekend

According to CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein, upcoming fifth-year senior Joe Girard will visit Clemson this weekend. The 6-foot-1 Syracuse guard is a dynamic scorer capable of taking over games behind the three-point arc. Girard averaged 16.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting 40% from the floor. A career 36% shooter from long range, Girard posted a 38% mark in 32 games (all starts).

Girard and forward Jesse Edwards entered the transfer portal following the end of action and Jim Boeheim’s retirement after 47 years. Clemson narrowly missed the 2023 NCAA Tournament and finished third in the regular-season standings. He previously visited LSU and has been contacted by Pitt.

Former Pitt Forward John Hugley Commits to Oklahoma

John Hugley has found a new home. The former Pitt forward committed to Oklahoma Thursday, Hugley told Joe Tipton of On3. He sat out most of the year for mental health purposes and was the Panthers’ leading scorer a season ago.

Hugley announced his decision to transfer the morning of Pitt’s first NCAA Tournament game since 2016 when the Panthers faced Mississippi State in Dayton. He was an All-ACC Honorable Mention at Pitt, starting 31 of 32 games. Hugley averaged 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds before making only eight appearances (six starts) before stepping away from the program.

NC State Forward Greg Gantt Commits to UNC Asheville

NC State forward Greg Gantt will play at UNC Ashville next season, per Verbal Commits. The 6-foot-8 redshirt junior scored 43 total points in 22 games (17 starts) for the Wolfpack and grabbed 99 rebounds, 31 on the offensive glass. The Fayetteville, N.C. native played for Providence before joining NC State for one season. UNC Ashville finished 27-8 and lost to UCLA in the first round of March Madness.
