Djordje Djokovic reveals Nick Kyrgios would have “99 percent played in Banja Luka” if not for the knee surgery. Djordje Djokovic, the tournament director at the Srpska Open in Banja Luka, revealed a couple of months ago the tournament was in talks with Kyrgios.

But Kyrgios – who had surgery on his knee in January – is still recovering from the surgery and he wasn’t able to compete in Banja Luka last week. Last year, Djordje Djokovic spoke extremely highly of Kyrgios and acknowledged the Australian’s effort to help Novak Djokovic during the Australia visa saga.

In the future, Djordje Djokovic hopes to have Kyrgios in Belgrade or Banja Luka.

“The contract was never signed, but I am still in contact with his people to this day.

I am almost convinced that he would have played in Banja Luka, let’s say 99 percent, only if not for the surgery. I think he is also sorry, because he is first of all a great entertainer of the audience, but also a great tennis player.

People forget how good a tennis player he is because of everything that happens off the court and the controversies. He is great and honest. When the world turned against Novak, he was the first to stand behind him and against his government.

He will never forget that and, as far as we are concerned, he will always be welcomed with open arms and the door is always open to him. He is quite young, Novak has who knows how many more years to play, so we will certainly succeed in bringing him to Belgrade, and maybe to Banja Luka one day, we will see,” Djordje Djokovic said, per Srpska Info.

After undergoing knee surgery in January, Kyrgios was hoping to be ready to return in Indian Wells. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen as Kyrgios has yet to play in 2023.
