After enduring a winless streak for almost a year, Denny Hamlin finally tasted victory once more by claiming the checkered flag on the final lap at Kansas. At the winner’s press conference, a journalist asked Hamlin about matching Tony Stewart’s major accomplishment, given their history as teammates. The JGR driver was also queried on the importance of this feat and the implications of equalling a racing icon like Stewart.

Hamlin stated, “Yeah, it’s big. Certainly, that’s why I want to get at least 11 more, is that it just puts you up there with some of the really, really big names of the sport. But again, being matched with Tony is unbelievable. I don’t know what to say. I certainly didn’t think I’d ever have won, much less that many.”

Hamlin certainly possessed the aspiration to outdo Tony in wins, with several years ahead to achieve this objective. Yet, to genuinely challenge Stewart’s esteemed legacy, he’d require a championship win in his remaining time on the track.
