Stanford adds Shaw as Associate Head Basketball Coach

Kyle Smith, the Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men’s Basketball, has announced the addition of Jim Shaw as the Oscar da Silva Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach.

“Coach Shaw is a veteran coach who has had winning follow him wherever he has been.  That is no accident,” said Smith. “Jim is the best coach I have worked with.  His attention to detail, his organization, and his ability to teach are second to none. He has invested most of his life to the service of others”

Shaw joins the Cardinal after spending the previous five seasons at Washington State, helping guide the Cougars to a 25-10 mark and second-place finish in the Pac-12 in 2023-24. The Cougars received a No. No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the round of 32 with a victory over Drake in the opening round. The Cougars also played in the NIT in 2022 and 2023.

“Jim will involve himself in all aspects of the program, but his main emphasis will be to coordinate with Wayne Hunter on the defensive side of the ball,” continued Smith. “Jim was the architect of one of the stingiest defenses in the country last year, ‘the Shawmble,’ which was a top 25 defense nationally. He has been a part of 19 NCAA tournament teams as a coach and a player – obviously he understands what it takes to win.”

Joining Kyle Smith’s staff at Washington State in 2019, Shaw was previously the head coach at Western Oregon from 2015-19. He led the Wolves to a 102-30 overall record, including two 31-win campaigns, which included a No. 1 overall ranking and three trips to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball tournament. He led the program to three Elite Eights, marking the first time Western Oregon reached the round of eight in a national tournament since 1982, and a Final Four in 2016.

Shaw was the GNAC Coach of the Year twice as well as the National Basketball Coaches’ Association’s West Region Coach of the Year in 2018.

Shaw spent two seasons alongside Randy Bennett at Saint Mary’s, with one year as a special assistant to the head coach during the 2013-14 season before becoming an assistant coach in 2014-15. With the Gaels, Shaw helped guide the Gaels to back-to-back 20-win seasons as well as a pair of postseason appearances.

Prior to Saint Mary’s, Shaw spent nine seasons (2004-2013) as an assistant coach at the University of Washington alongside former head coach Lorenzo Romar. During his time at Washington, the Huskies went a combined 208-100, which is the best nine-year record in school history, while also going 118-54 from 2009-2013 to mark the best five-year stretch in school history.

During that span, Shaw was a part of five Pac-10 Championships, five NCAA Tournament appearances, and three appearances in the Sweet 16. He was pivotal in the Huskies’ run to their first Pac-10 Tournament championship in 2005 and first No. 1 seed into the NCAA Tournament.
