In just more than a month, about two dozen local first responders will go head-to-head in Guns N Hoses. It’s a charity boxing competition to raise money for families of fallen firefighters, police, and EMS.After training for months, boxers began their sparring evaluations on Monday to hopefully get a match for the big night. There are more than 60 boxers vying for one of about 24 spots. The prep work ahead of any boxing match is long. For Chlo-Ann Rizzo, it hasn’t necessarily been easy.”I had to learn all the punches, the footwork, everything,” Rizzo said. “Sparring with them is like signing up to be in a car accident repeatedly.”Rizzo has worked in law enforcement since the early 90s – currently working as the supervisor for campus police in Blue Valley. Now, for the first time in her life, she’s hoping to make it to the boxing ring.”We’ll get in there and spar and just see if they can make a good match,” Rizzo said. Inside the Police Athletic League in KCK, Rizzo and dozens of members of local law enforcement showed off their skills. They are all fighting to make a match for the Guns N Hoses boxing night. “Everybody wants to get a bout, and of course, everybody wants to win,” said Jan Zimmerman, the director of the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund. “We match them based on age, weight and skill level, which we’ll be looking at tonight.”It’s all part of a charity event to raise money for the SAFE — the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund.”What the program does is provide an immediate financial benefit to the families of first responders who are killed in the line of duty,” Zimmerman said. For Rizzo, that’s reason enough to step in the ring.”To have the opportunity to do something good and to give back to their families, is it’s just a blessing I can’t describe. So that is another thing that’s just really kept me going throughout this process is remembering their sacrifice,” Rizzo said. She’s hopeful she’ll get the chance to fight for a good cause.Boxers will learn if they made the cut in about a week. Guns N Hoses will be on Saturday, June 24, at Municipal Auditorium. If you would like to buy tickets, general admission costs $25 on Ticketmaster.
