Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the French Open as the Australian won’t be making his first appearance at Roland Garros since 2017. Kyrgios, 27, made five consecutive French Open appearances between 2013 and 2017. Last year, Kyrgios said several times that his intention was to return to the French Open in 2023 as he promised his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi to take her to Paris.

In January, Kyrgios underwent knee surgery. Kyrgios has been out since and he is now also set to miss the French Open.

No French Open return for Kyrgios this year

In December, Kyrgios repeated once again his intention was to play the French Open in 2023.

“Yes, I’m playing the French Open. My girlfriend (Costeen Hatzi) wants to see Paris, so why not? Pick up some more money (in Paris). I’ve played well on clay, I’ve beaten (Roger) Federer, (Stan) Wawrinka, I’ve played a final on clay (in Estoril in 2015).

But usually at that time of year I like spending time at home. Because if I don’t, then I’m travelling for eight months a year. It’s too much. But she likes Paris so why not?” Kyrgios said in December. After a great 2022 season, Kyrgios sustained an unfortunate knee injury just before the start of the 2023 season.

In February, Kyrgios’ manager Daniel Horsfall drew positives from the situation, saying this way the Australian was guaranteed to return to the court fully healthy. “A lot of things players don’t get in general is the time to recover.

You play all year round. It is disappointing that he’s had this surgery but it means two things, he’s had his knee cleaned up and is going to be back better than ever. But also, we have this time to get him fitter and stronger than he was this time last year.

It’s all green lights,” Horsfall said in February. Kyrgios is now likely aiming to return during the grass season.
