Nadia Podoroska sets up SF against lucky loser, Maria Timofeeva

Nadia Podoroska reached the semi-finals of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Friday. The ninth seed from Argentina beat sixth seed Elina Avanesyan 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 22 minutes.Avanesyan put in more first serves in as compared to Podoroska, 72% to the latter’s 52%.
But it was Podoroska who won more first-serve points – 63% to Avanesyan’s 39%. The Argentine also fared well when it came to winning second-serve return points. The world no. 80 won 52% of her second-serve points and 67% points on return on her opponent’s second serve.
Of the five break points she faced, Podoroska saved three but she also went on to convert six of seven break points that came her way on Avanesyan’s serve.This is the first time in nearly 10 months that Podoroska’s reached the semi-final of a WTA Tour event.
Last year, she made it to the semi-final of the Chennai International in September before bowing out to eventual champion, Linda Fruhvirtova.
Hungarian Grand Prix: Maria Timofeeva makes the most of her luck
Meanwhile, looking to reach her first WTA final, Podoroska will play Maria Timofeeva.
Timofeeva defeated Kaja Juvan 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 35 minutes.This is the second time this week the 19-year-old Timofeeva’s won a match after losing the opening set. In the first round, she made a similar comeback against Daria Saville.
Timofeeva saved 10 of the 12 break points she faced while converting four break points on the Slovenian’s serve.This’ been quite a debut for Timofeeva who’s now made it to the semi-finals of a WTA event in the first time of making it to the main draw.Claire Liu posted an upset over eighth seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in their quarter-final match.
The American won 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 11 minutes to reach the semi-finals. Liu now awaits the winner between Fanny Stollar and Kateryna Baindl. Their quarter-final clash at the Hungarian Grand Prix had to be suspended on Friday evening with the scores tied at one-all in the first set.Photo Credit: Nadia Podoroska Twitter
