The Philadelphia 76ers could pursue a reunion with this veteran free agent

As the roster currently stands, the Philadelphia 76ers still have two open roster spots with the offseason approaching its waning stages. And even amid uncertainty about what the lineup could look like before training camp, the front office still has some options in the free agency market that they can pursue to plug some roster holes heading into the upcoming season.

With so many teams having already sapped their cap space, a slew of free agents still on the board should come cheap for potential suitors. That plays well into the 76ers’ hand, as the front office doesn’t really have much wiggle room to make a play for a free agent or two.

That being said, the team could pursue a reunion with his veteran free agent who donned Philly’s colors not too long ago. And the cost should nowhere be lofty.

Danny Green, a prominent role player for the 76ers from 2020 to 2022, remains on the free agent market after making cameo appearances for the Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers last season in his comeback following an ACL tear which effectively ended his tenure with the franchise. On a recent podcast, he bared that he continues to keep playing and doesn’t intend to hang his sneakers up anytime soon.

While the 76ers don’t have a dearth of options in the wings, Green could still function as a nice insurance depth piece for the team. The three-time NBA champion, despite a major injury, should be useful in spurts as a perimeter defender and a three-point threat as a career 40 percent shooter from deep.

More importantly, his veteran presence should be very welcome as a stabilizer for a team that will likely face some significant roster turnover soon. Young cogs Tyrese Maxey and even Jaden Springer could benefit from having a point person to soak corporate knowledge from in terms of winning. Few may know, but Green touts the second-best winning percentage by an active player, having won in 70.7 percent of games he appeared in.

Alas, having been gone from the team for only a year, Green should still be familiar with most players on the roster. Heck, he may even contend for a rotation spot with the wing rotation off the bench not exactly a strong point of the team as currently constructed.

For the veteran’s minimum, the 76ers could do much worse than try to pursue a reunion with Danny Green. While uncommon, second go-rounds can still work as long as no bitter feelings persist. And give his reputation, the chemistry can only get better with him in the locker room.
