Cardinal Long Snapper Shane Tomlin Named to Special Teams U All-American Watch

Wheeling, W. Va. – Over the last three seasons, the Wheeling University Football team has had a strong special teams unit, led by long snapper Shane Tomlin. Throughout his time in a Cardinal uniform, Tomlin has been one of the most reliable snappers in the conference, setting his kickers and punters up for success each time he goes out on the field. Tomlin, who was recognized as a 2024 NFL Draft Prospect by NFL Draft Diamonds, is once again being recognized for his efforts by being named to the Special Teams U All-American Watch List.

The Special Teams U All-American Watch List is only open to seniors but includes long snappers from every level of college football from Division I to Division III and Junior Colleges. Tomlin was one of 18 long snappers recognized on the list and one of just two Long Snappers at the Division II level that made the list, joining Bentley’s Sal Lupoli Jr. The players are picked based on a variety of factors, including snap speed and accuracy, as well as their ability to play at the next level according to the voting committee. Tomlin has been picked for several preseason awards in the past but is earning his first preseason All-American honor of his career.

Tomlin came to the Cardinals during the Spring 2021 season after playing his first collegiate season at NCAA Division III Mount Union. Over the course of his three years in a Cardinals uniform, Tomlin has been the long snapper in every game for the team. He has been a part of some of the biggest wins over the last several seasons, including snapping the game winning field goal to former Cardinal Matt Greenwood on the final game of the regular season in 2022 as the Cardinals beat Fairmont State 31-28 on senior day. Long Snapper is a position that often goes unnoticed on the field, unless things go wrong, and Tomlin says he loves that role and is honored to be picked for this award.

“To be one of only 18 snappers named to the (Special Teams U All-American) Watch List means the world to me,” said Tomlin. “Getting recognition as a long snapper doesn’t come easily, especially when you aren’t playing on ESPN every Saturday. My job is to be as consistent and efficient as possible every time I’m on the field, and that means I go unnoticed. I love that role, but it does feel good to know that people see and appreciate my work. At the end of the day, I just want to help my team win games and reach our goals. Being on this list gives me the opportunity to represent my team and Division II football as a whole, and I look forward to doing that this…
