Top Prospect Rankings By Position Are Loaded with Chicago Cubs

In addition to doing its overall top 100 list and individual team top 30 lists, MLB Pipeline also ranks prospects at each individual position for an additional set of top ten lists. It’s just another fun data point to see how the Pipeline crew believes certain prospects stack up against each other.

It allows you to see things like …

  • James Triantos is ranked as the 6th best second base prospect in baseball, just a couple spots behind A’s prospect Zack Gelof, who is a top 100 guy. The Cubs have been playing with Triantos’ position lately, so he’s really more of a 2B/3B/OF utility guy than a second base prospect, but then again, most future second baseman come from the ranks of minor league shortstops or utility types.
  • The Cubs have two of the top ten first base prospects in the minor leagues, with Matt Mervis at 6, and Haydn McGeary at 7 (kinda like 5 and 6 now that Nolan Schanuel is coming up). That’s a nice plaudit for the Cubs and their efforts to unearth guys like Mervis and McGeary (and maybe Brian Kalmer?), though you do have to keep in mind that other players do wind up moving to first base as you climb the ladder and/or as they get on in years in Major League Baseball. So not all of the best future first basemen in MLB would ever show up on a list like this. Still cool.
  • Pete Crow-Armstrong is the 5th ranked outfielder, which we already knew on the basis of the top 100 list – there are a lot of STUD outfield prospects in baseball right now, with PCA behind Jackson Chourio, Dylan Crews, James Wood, and Evan Carter.
  • Cade Horton is the 3rd ranked right-handed pitching prospect, and Jackson Ferris is the 9th ranked left-handed pitching prospect. Pretty great top of the draft for the Cubs last year, eh?
  • In total, 6 of the 80 named prospects on the lists are Cubs prospects.
