Cremaschi gets first USMNT senior call-up, Reyna out amid injury recovery for


The U.S. men’s national team’s roster released Wednesday features two new players for next month’s friendlies, with dual-national Kristoffer Lund joining the squad and Ben Cremaschi getting his first senior call-up. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The left back Lund, 21, filed a one-time switch after previously representing Denmark at the youth international level.
  • Cremaschi, 18, heads to the senior team after playing for both the U.S. and Argentina’s youth national teams. He has recently entered the spotlight playing alongside Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
  • The USMNT will play two friendlies in September, starting with a matchup against Uzbekistan on Sept. 9 at CITYPARK in St. Louis.
  • The matches will be coach Gregg Berhalter’s first since being rehired in June.

Adams, Reyna out with injuries

Two key members of the U.S. team are out still due to extended absences and will miss Berhalter’s first camp back as manager: Tyler Adams and Gio Reyna. Adams has been out since March after undergoing hamstring surgery and was not included in this squad. His absence continues to open up opportunities to see the depth in central midfield, and Johnny Cardoso and Cremaschi will both get a chance to show their value to Berhalter. It’s an especially big opportunity for Cremaschi, who is also eligible for Argentina and could be fighting for an Olympic roster spot for the U.S.

Reyna’s absence extends the waiting period for Berhalter and the star winger to be back together with the national team for the first time since the World Cup fallout and scandal. Reyna has been out since June 18 after being injured in the CONCACAF Nations League final and returned to full training with Borussia Dortmund this week.

Berhalter told Vanity Fair this week that he has still not spoken with Reyna since the 20-year-old’s parents, former national team players Claudio and Danielle Reyna, told U.S. Soccer Federation leadership about an incident involving Berhalter and his then-girlfriend, now-wife, Rosalind, 30 years ago when the two were freshmen at the University of North Carolina.
