Boston College swimming and diving team suspended over hazing

The Boston College men’s and women’s swimming and diving program was placed on indefinite suspension Wednesday after university administrators determined that hazing had occurred within the program.”The university does not — and will not — tolerate hazing in any form,” reads a statement from the Boston College Athletics Department.The exact nature of the hazing that happened within the BC swimming and diving program remains unclear at this point, as well as how far back that hazing goes.”Obviously, it’s a shock,” said sophomore student Paul Zeller. “It’s not something you hear about around BC a lot.””I think they should investigate hazing, always,” said sophomore student Tess Scrivner. “Sometimes it can seem mild, but it can be a lot worse, and if you start letting it go on the little stuff, you never know what could happen.”The Athletics Department stated that during the suspension, all student-athletes in the swimming and diving program will continue to have access to academic and medical resources that are provided to all Boston College student-athletes.In an email to WCVB, a spokesperson for the National Collegiate Athletics Association said hazing is a matter for local law enforcement and/or university leadership to address.”NCAA best practices encourage athletics administrators, coaches and student-athletes to work together to develop anti-hazing policies which promote healthy team activities and avoid practices that humiliate team members,” the spokesperson wrote in their email.NewsCenter 5 has contacted Boston College officials for further comment about the hazing investigation, but has yet to receive a reply back.NewsCenter 5 has also requested comment from multiple members of the Boston College swimming and diving program, but has yet to receive a reply back from any of them.Related story:
