Exhibit explores moonshine, bootleggers, road to NASCAR

HICKORY — The Hickory History Center in the Lyerly House is celebrating the county’s moonshiners, bootleggers, ridge runners and North Carolina NASCAR racers in a new exhibit.

“The Legacy of Moonshine & the Road to NASCAR” explores the stages of Prohibition from the Anti-Saloon League, the increase in moonshiners during that time, the rise of speakeasys, the Gatsby girls, to the ridge runners and the fast road to NASCAR. To highlight this new exhibit, Harper House is celebrating 100 years of the Harper speakeasy.

Catawba County’s moonshine history is filled with exciting stories of speakeasys, car chases, court cases and colorful characters you think would only live in books or movies. The exhibit will highlight Prohibition, as well as the distilling of moonshine, and an understanding of the bootleggers’ innovative modifications of cars made to go faster and conceal the illegal shine from the law.
