Tennis coach Riccardo Piatti spoke out, in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, on the reasons that led Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to give up the Davis Cup in September, to regain energy for the upcoming events on the ATP Tour.

The Italian coach gave very direct words, explaining: “They skipped Davis because they think about their survival. Not because they think about Asian swing, it’s a very different thing. There will be moments in their career where they feel ready to play Davis and others where they won’t.

For me, Italy shouldn’t be afraid because they have a team with many players. Anyone who fails a player does so more out of ignorance than anything else.”

Then he added on the topic: “Whoever knows the construction of a player is aware of the necessary stages.

When I followed Novak Djokovic, I remember an Australian Open where both he and Andy Murray lost in the first round. They attacked them saying that there were no valid replacements , but I’d say in retrospect both were great replacements!” In this way, the 64-year-old Italian coach wanted to side in favor of the decision taken by Sinner and Alcaraz, the two modern tennis talents, trying to extinguish the controversies that had arisen in recent days.

Piatti on his coaching career

Riccardo Piatti also focused on his recent past as a trainer of very successful athletes: “Being the coach, I make the technical, tactical and strategic decisions until we no longer agree and we have to part ways.

Of course there is a dialogue, but if an athlete pays me it is to hear what I think and generally follow me.

In my career I have brought Ljubicic, Raonic, Gasquet and Sinner to the Masters for a total of six participations.

Leading a tennis player into the top 10 means knowing a certain path and for this reason I feel confident.”
