Arsenal needed to bounce back in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and Mikel Arteta’s men did just that as they beat Europa League holders Sevilla in their own back yard.

Gabriel Martinelli struck just before half-time after being teed up by Gabriel Jesus, and the Brazilian striker went from provider to scorer after the break to make it 2-0. But Nemanja Gudelj pulled one back for the Spaniards, and the Gunners were forced to hold out amid a nervy finish.

Arteta’s focus will now turn to a home game with Sheffield United on Saturday, as his side look to maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season. But the manager faces an anxious wait on the fitness of some of his key men.

Jesus limps off with hamstring injury

It was a mixed night for Gabriel Jesus in Spain, the forward finishing his night by limping off late on with a hamstring injury.

Jesus enjoyed a fine game, where he teed up Martinelli superbly for the Gunners’ opener before bagging a goal of his own early in the second half, but was seen clutching at his hamstring in the closing stages. The 26-year-old walked off gingerly in the 81st minute as he was replaced by Eddie Nketiah.

Asked afterwards whether the substitution was precautionary, Arteta answered: “No. He felt something and asked to be subbed. It’s not good news because Gabby is not the type of player to do that.”
