Shohei Ohtani’s $700 Million Contract In Perspective: More Than Any NBA Player

Shohei Ohtani agreed to a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles, shattering the MLB contract record, previously held by former teammate Mike Trout who signed a 12-year $426.5 million deal in 2019.

But how can we truly put his $700 million guarantee, and $70 million average annual salary into perspective?

To start, Ohtani is making more than annually than eight other MLB teams’ current payroll for the 2024 season.

The $700 million contract is more than any NBA player has made on the court, excluding endorsements and outside income, in their entire career, per Front Office Sports.

Ohtani’s $70 million average yearly salary is more than every WNBA, NWSL and PWHL player will make in one season, combined.

The $700 million guarantee is more than the highest guarantees of the three other major sports leagues — NFL, NBA and NHL — combined.

The contract is worth more than all 12 WNBA teams, 23 of the 28 MLS franchises, and even the Arizona Coyotes in the NHL.

To provide some perspective outside of just sports, Ohtani’s contract is worth more than the GDP of six countries; Nauru, Palau, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Sao Tome and Principe, and Dominica.
