The rugby league world is in mourning following the death of popular former South Sydney captain Darrell Bampton.

A local Souths junior, Bampton was born in 1949 and captained the Bunnies to President’s Cup glory in 1969.

The following year, he made his top grade debut and went on to play 116 games in the famous red and green.

He also played for Collegians Wollongong as captain-coach in the mid 1970s, captaining the victorious Illawarra side against Great Britain in 1975.

After retirement, Bampton managed NSW and Australian teams but the Rabbitohs were always his first love.

One of the game’s true nice guys, Bampton was awarded Life Membership of SSDRLFC in 1994.

His funeral this week is set to be attended by Souths greats from near and far.
