Royal Navy triumph against the RAF in high-profile Challenge Cup first round

The Royal Navy rugby league team have beaten the RAF 28-22 at RAF Cranwell to book a place in the second round of the Challenge Cup.

A strong first half performance saw the RAF lead at half-time, but the Navy hit back in the second half to continue their top form.

The Navy have now beaten the RAF in their last three meetings including key Inter Services ties.

A terrific first half saw the RAF take the lead through James Crabb, but a double from James Teixera dragged the reigning Inter Services champions into a winning position.

However, they couldn’t keep up the momentum as the Air Force scored three tries in quick succession through Harry Davies (2) and Joe Thresh to lead 18-12 at half-time.

The second half saw Darren Bamford’s Navy team stage a comeback.

Jack Ray levelled the scores before the Navy pressure paid off leading to another try in the corner from Jack Bartlett for a 22-18 lead.

Charlie Mattison went over to complete a 28-22 win for the Navy despite Finn O’Brien scoring late for the RAF.

They’ve been rewarded for the victory with a home tie in the next round against Thatto Heath Crusaders.
