An emotional and tumultuous trip to jail deeply affected Calvin Ford. The American trainer seized headlines earlier this month as he found himself behind bars for alleged assault with a deadly weapon. While biding his time there, the first one to call him was Gervonta Davis.

Baltimore police arrested the respected coach on December 29, as he was wanted on two assault charges. While the specifics are yet to be made public, an incident occurred in Las Vegas almost a year ago that put him in trouble with the authorities. Ford then spent almost a month locked up while waiting for extradition to Nevada. As Ford wrestled with the unrest and strife, ‘Tank’ was there to support him.

In a conversation with The Rize Podcast, Ford poured it all out—his jail experience and what it made him realize. However, what he fondly remembers is Davis’ call to him. The 58-year-old trainer’s famed disciple was the first to call him in jail as he went through turmoil.

Ford said, First call I got [was], ‘Tank’ calls. Said, ‘Hey, yo, I see sh*t chase over nothing’.”

The Baltimore Banner has reported that Ford showed a gun to the authorities while being pulled out of the SUV. This happened after the authorities acted on a robbery call. While the evidence is scarce and the legal process is underway, Ford’s team is standing through thick and thin with him. He was dearly missed at Upton Boxing Centre, where he helped hone the boxing skills of hundreds of rising and aspiring boxers.

Ford’s team defends him

Kenny Ellis, Ford’s reliable partner, recently echoed the same words that Davis told Ford on the call. He was adamant about Ford’s innocence and denied the charges against him. “They picked him up on some false accusations that somebody accused him of doing,” he declared.

Ellis has maintained that he was with Ford during the incident. Further, he argued that if the incident indeed happened, he should have been arrested as well. However, this was not the case. “[I] want to let the people know that he’s been falsely accused. And the truth will rise to the top,” Ellis declared.

The details of the incident and the current proceedings remain sketchy. It’s not the first time that Upton Boxing Centre has had trouble with the authorities. Previously, Davis also had to spend 44 days in a facility following a crash incident. This time, the truth is unwinding slowly.
